Citrine, a transparent variety of silica quartz, whose color ranges from pale yellow to brown due to different impurities and natural heating in the Earth. Natural Citrine is very rare and most commercial Citrine is simply heat treated Amethyst or smoky quartz. According to various sources, 90-95% of the Citrine on the market is heat treated. Although, the majority of Citrine is sold as natural, so be sure to buy from a reputable source. Secret Earth Crystals sells both natural and heat treated Citrine, and will always be sure to specify before an item is sold. Heat treated Amethyst or smoky quartz will have a more reddish tone in the crystal, as opposed to a natural Citrine’s cloudy or smoky appearance.

Brazil is the largest producer of Citrine. Citrine gets its name from french for citron, or lemon for its lighter shades. Besides Amethyst, Citrine is one of the most well-known Quartz gemstones. Citrine can also show up in Amethyst when it is naturally heated in the ground, making it a combination known as Ametrine. Citrine is sometimes confused with Topaz because of its similar tones. Citrine is the birthstone for November and it is also recognized as the gem that commemorates the thirteenth anniversary. Throughout history, Citrine's have been valued for their beauty and brilliance. They remind us of the bright, warm sun and the vitality of life. Their vibrant yellow color and shining clarity often represent a healthy mind and body as well as happiness and success.
