Chrysoprase is a gemstone variety of chalcedony containing small amounts of nickel. It usually occurs as apple-green but varies in shades to a deep green. The darker variations as sometimes called prase. Chrysoprase is a cryptocrystalline meaning that it is composed of crystals so fine, that it cannot be seen as distinct from each other under normal magnification. This sets it apart from rock crystals like amethyst or citrine. Other members of the cryptocrystalline family include, agate, carnelian, onyx. The name comes Greek, chrysos, meaning gold and prasinon, meaning green.
